Is it possible to use a p3 600 slot 1 chip on a asus p2b board and if so what should the jumper settings be set at ,the manual only lists up to a p3 550
As long as you have the latest BIOS, you can upgrade most of these boards to the fastest Coppermine processors: the Pentium III 1.1GHz and the Celeron 1.1GHz.
Please note that currently there is an issue with BIOS versions 1013 and 1014 for the entire P2B family that prevents 1.1GHz processors from working correctly. Until ASUS provides a new BIOS update, you should go with the 1GHz processors. Other motherboards are not affected.
These boards will not support the Tualatin processors (1.2GHz and above). Please see the article Are Tualatins compatible with my motherboard? for more information.
Multiplier is NOT an issue with these boards, as Intel processors are clock locked. The processors will ignore the motherboard settings and use their own hardwired multiplier. You will not need to set the multiplier jumpers, nor worry about very high multipliers not being supported.
With many of the ASUS Slot 1 boards, you can even use 133MHz FSB processors. Be aware though, that the BX chipset does not officially support the 133MHz FSB and is not guaranteed to operate at this frequency. In addition, the AGP bus will be running out of spec at 89MHz as the BX chipset has no 1/2 AGP multiplier. Most recent video cards, such as the nVidia GeForce family, are able to handle these speeds without too much difficulty.
As long as you have the correct PCB version and the latest BIOS, you should have no difficulty upgrading. The following table indicates which PCB version is required to natively support Coppermine processors without any additional work. You can find the PCB revision printed in small lettering next to the motherboard model name on the motherboard itself (usually between the PCI slots).

If you have a board which has an older PCB revision, you can still upgrade your processor. The problem with these older boards is a lack of voltage support requested by Coppermine processors (VRM8.4). These boards physically cannot send voltages lower than 1.80 volts (the lower limit of the old Pentium II/Pentium III standard, VRM 8.3).
You can get around this problem by using an FC-PGA processor and a Slotket with manual voltage adjustment. You must set the voltage on the slotket to 1.80 volts. This will over-ride the VRM 8.4 voltage request that the motherboard does not understand, and allow the system to operate. Although the voltage is not the same as the nominal default voltage for the processor (1.65-1.75 volts), it is within Coppermine processor tolerances and does help with overclocking, should you decide to do so. The system will not boot if you do not set the voltage.
Additional notes:
All of the P2B family of boards have a 1/4 PCI divider setting, as indicated by the presence of two 133MHz FSB jumper settings. Ensure that you select the correct setting.
The P2B rev 1.10 has a VRM which seems to support voltages below 1.80 volts in 0.10 increments, so a slotket may not be needed for processors which default to 1.70 volts (cC0 stepping Coppermines).
There are two major revisions of the P2B-F: one is marked rev 1.00, the other marked 1.00. (note the additional period on the end). The rev 1.00. is the newer board which has native support for Coppermines. This board has additional an additional FSB jumper (FS0 to FS3) while the older board has only 3 jumpers (FS0 to FS2; FS3 is soldered down). Because of the difficulties in telling the various revisions of the P2B-F apart, only the following PCBA revs are guaranteed to work: A0A, A0B, A1A, A1B, A2A, A2B, A33, A34, A43, A44, A53, A54.
The P2B-S and P2B-DS do not support the 133MHz FSB. The highest documented FSB setting is 112MHz on these boards. Certain very late revisions may have the 133MHz FSB setting.
The P2L97 series, P2V, P2E, P2B98-XV cannot be upgraded to Coppermine processors with the workaround outlined above.
